After researching the issue I came to the conclusion that the spring had broken off the latch. After ordering a new latch and upon installation I realized that the other end of the spring plastic had broken off and not the end on the latch. Unfortunately the other end is part of the entire door assembly. I did not utilize the part purchased and just drilled a small whole in the side plastic for the spring to hook into. After doing this the microwave latch now works again. This was easier and cheaper than purchasing a whole door assembly due to the small plastic hook being broken. I will keep the latch purchased just in case this breaks in the future.
