The fabric softener was still in the dispenser unit after the wash cycle. Replacing the water inlet valve makes it so the fabric softener is now fully dispensed.
The fix was fairly easy. There is a video showing all that needs to be done to complete the repair.
The wrench helped in loosening the hot/cold water supply from the valve.
