The fridge is only about 2 years old and belongs to my 78 year old Mom. She didn't buy the extended warranty and a repair tech could not get to her for 4-5 days. Being a DIYer I've never repaired a new fridge but have worked on older refrigerators, washers, dryers, and small appliances. I researched appliance repair and forums and came across Appliantology.org. I registered, and of course broke the rules on my first post by not providing the model # in the title and so it was deleted. I paid my $19.00 begrudgingly in order to download the repair manual, which by the way I found after watching a helpful video. The cheap and temporary fix was to just unplug the unit and let nature defrost the freezer section nearest the evaporator fan motor. Of course at this point I didn't have the repair manual in hand so removing the bottom freezer door was more difficult and time consuming than it should have been. When I put it back together the noisy fan motor sound was gone and cooling & freezing had resumed to normal operations. This quick & free fix only lasted a few days before the problem returned. Now properly armed with the repair manual, and the new evaporator fan motor from AppliancePartsPros.com, which arrived in less than 24-hrs from my order, excellent turnaround I must say; I headed back to Mom's to fix it right. The manual made it less than a 2-minute job to remove the freezer door versus the 15-20 minute job doing it the hard way. Using a couple of screwdrivers, I was able to remove the failing iced-over evaporator fan motor and install the new one making sure to "water-proof" the molex connector with a small plastic bag & electrical tape. Before putting on the inside rear back panel, I powered on the unit to check for proper operation. Satisfied the new evaporator fan motor was working properly, I reinstalled the back panel and the ice maker, and quickly reinstalled the freezer door and food baskets. Hopefully I won't need to replace the Main PCB as suggested in the Appliance Forum. If I do, I'm confident AppliancePartsPros.com will get me the part promptly and I can quickly make the necessary repair. I'm rating the repair a 3 instead of a 2 based on some of the research required and the fact that new parts were necessary.
