I ordered a new lower heating element and waited for it to arrive. When it arrived, I shut off the electric to the oven. I removed the two screws that mount the element to the oven. One was stripped so this required a hardware store trip to find matching screws. This is not a typical issue, but mine nonetheless. Once I arrived back home I pulled the element out so that the wires and connections were exposed. I verified no current was being passed to the element with a meter. The wires were connected to the heating element with spade clips. I pulled the clips/wires off of the old element and attached them to the new. I pushed the element back into place and used the new screws to mount the new heating element to the oven.
