We went through a period of time when opening and shutting the lid would induce it to start working. Finally, it just stopped. Looked online, found that a switch connected to the lid could go bad and was a common cause of that problem. YouTube showed how to detach the control panel on top of the washer (very easy; just two screws to remove, then wiggle loose) and access the switch (lying on top in plain sight). Took off the switch and looked inside. Verified that the interior was brown-stained from burning out, just as shown. AppliancePartsPros.com showed the replacement part, available as the original GE component. Ordered it and it came in a few days. Installing the new part and reassembling the washer was ridiculously easy. The only problem was that I initially tried to guess how to disassemble and reassemble things without looking at YouTube. Once I knew what I was doing, it took only a few minutes. I should say that not all YouTube directions are equally easy to follow. If things are unclear or the installation appears forced, go find another video. Things should come apart and reassemble very easily.
