A friend who can fix almost anything diagnosed the problem and fixed it, using the parts from you. the problem was the door switch. Part of the plastic trigger for it was broken off. diagnosis was difficult, because the problem was not obvious unless you knew what the original switch was supposed to look like. the switch appeared to work when actuated by hand.
