Dustin M Charlotte , NC January 07, 2023 Appliance: Model GSS20IETD BB Ice melting to a large clump and frost build up GE gss20ietdbb for years no parts were helping issue. My GSS20IETD BB side-by-side refrigerator had been having the ice form into a single mass over a period of a week after cleaning it out. It actually kept breaking my ice maker auger and pushing the slide-in tray or shelf over the ice maker up breaking it also. Frost would form all over food after about a couple of weeks. The ice auger motor would freeze up and stop turning. The coils did not have frost on them when I was able to view them. I replaced the thermistors in the freezer, defrost the heater, and tried 2 other mainboards with the same issue. When I replaced the defrost heater from the single element to the dual element the problem seemed to get worse. I then replaced the defrost thermostat because it read closed or continuity at room temperature. Because I watched a random video of a defrost thermostat continuity test and assumed mine was made this way. OEM thermostat replacement WR50X10068 L140-30F. Installed and the problem persisted. Thinking it was supposed to measure open until reaching 30 degrees. The new thermostat measured closed or continuity at room temperature also. Thinking I received a faulty part I ordered another and measured closed at room temperature also. Spoke with a representative to confirm the thermostats were either faulty or were actually made differently. Found that it was made to be normally closed with continuity at room temperature. The engineer/technician recommended thermostat WR50X122 or AP2071262 being L60 or 60 degrees F defrost limit instead of 140 degrees F. My refrigerator now produces ice perfectly and no frosting up the items inside. The dual-element heater works best in this scenario where it can get defrosted quickly and get back to cooling. Both sides freezer and refrigerator have never been so cold! With the unit getting older it may not be able to cool like it used to and in turn, kept the defrost heater on constantly melting the ice. Jerald V Wyoming , MI October 20, 2014 Low cool on the fresh food side soft ice cream on the freezer side I followed your "Diagnosing a refrigerator" on your web site. Your information suggested I remove the panel at the back of the freezer. I did, and the evaporator was covered with ice. I defrosted it with a hair dryer and then tested the defroster heater. It tested open. I ordered the heater and a thermostat at 3:00PM and had them mid-morning the next day. I replaced the components later in the day. The next morning I had 32dgrees on the fresh food side and 0degrees in the freezer. I've played with settings since and now have 38 degrees and 5 degrees. Very satisfied!!!! Thank You very much.
