Manufacturer Part Number: WH43X31240

The Auger is an OEM part for GE washing machines. It is responsible for agitating and moving the clothes during the wash cycle. The auger is designed to create a gentle and thorough wash by creating a swirling motion that helps to remove dirt and stains from the garments. It ensures that your clothes are properly cleaned and evenly distributed throughout the wash.

Causes of a bad auger can include wear and tear over time, exposure to heavy loads or unbalanced loads that put excessive strain on the auger, or damage due to foreign objects getting stuck or tangled in the mechanism.

Symptoms of a bad auger include:

  • Clothes not being properly cleaned.
  • Excessive noise or vibration during the wash cycle.
  • Inability to agitate or move the clothes effectively.
  • Visible damage or wear on the auger.

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

Deb for Model Number MVWP575GW0

I have an agitator auger on my Maytag washer that just keeps popping off inside the washer. I heard a loud noise open the lid and there it lays. The base is tight, the bolts are tight. It was replaced in Feb this year under my warranty along with the gear case and pulley transmission. The replaced the agitator with part WP3946996. Maybe that is not the part for my washer. Anyway, I have terrible lung disease and don't want anyone in my house so I am willing to pay for the parts myself outside of warranty only I have no clue what part to order. I checked online and not may people complain of auger laying inside the machine. I can not see any broken pieces or loose pieces and am quite clueless as to what locks this in place. It is not like the videos I have watched. Do you have any ideas what part I need. I can't imagine the new agitator auger needs to be replaced again.

1 Answer

Deb, There is an agitator coupler that may be bad and causing the auger to pop off. The part that you would need to get the coupler would be the agitator coupler W11561052. It probably would be a good idea to go ahead and replace the auger W11480892 as well.

Rob for Model Number GTW460ASJ0WW

Hello, I need some advice on removing the auger from my GE Washer model # GTW460ASJ0WW. I've read the instructions in the Technical Service Manual, pages 48-50.  I believe this is the "Dual Action Agitator". Pages 49 and 50 respectively describe the "Screwdriver method" and the "strap wrench method".  If I understand correctly, both methods require jerking the auger sharply in the clockwise direction to disengage it from the agitator base. However the auger in my washer spins freely in the clockwise direction, with no resistance at all.  So I am unable to follow the directions. Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Rob p.s. I am doing this because I believe the brake has failed in the transmission. I believe the tub is spinning when in the wash/agitate cycle, and it did not do this before.  If I need to replace the transmission, I understand I'll first have to remove the auger to reach the agitator bolt. Hence my question.

Rob, with a screwdriver inserted in the agitator slot while it is aligned to the base notch, the spin basket would be rotated clockwise while jerking the screwdriver counterclockwise. This allows the rotation of the spin basket to counter the screwdriver being pulled, loosening the agitator tower.

Hello Jake, As per the service guide for model GTW460ASJ0WW; The auger assembly needs to be removed first to access the agitator bolt. To remove the auger, it must be twisted off of the agitator base clockwise. This can be done either using the screwdriver method or the strap wrench method. Screwdriver Method Removal 1. Locate the small protrusion near the bottom of the auger that mounts to the agitator base. 2. Rotate the auger until the hole lines up with the protrusion. This is the location where the inner wall of the auger is thin, so the screwdriver can go through it the easiest. NOTE: The hole is located approximately 3 inches from the bottom edge of the auger fin. 3. Using a thin shank screwdriver, twist it through the hole in the auger. Using the counterforce weight of the basket and the screwdriver handle as a lever, rotate the basket to the left slightly and then with a jerk motion, pop the auger free from the agitator base. Be sure to hold the screwdriver as level as possible. Strap Wrench Method Removal 1. Slide the strap wrench around the bottom of the auger (just below the movable part of the auger) and tighten it until it clicks into place. Important: Ensure the strap wrench is positioned where it will tighten when twisting the auger to the right. 2. Hold the strap against the handle of the wrench to prevent it from coming loose around the auger. 3. Using the counterforce weight of the basket, rotate the basket to the left slightly and then with a jerk motion, pop the auger free from the agitator base. Be sure to hold the strap wrench as level as possible. 4. Remove the 7/16 hex bolt and slide the impeller off of the shaft. The splined coupler is part of the impeller. Important: The impeller bolt WH02X24374 should be replaced any time it is removed for service, and torqued to 100 in. pounds.
