For Ge Refrigerator Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM11652969)

David for Model Number GTH18EBC2RWW

There are two thermostats attached to the evaporator at the top of the freezer. The integrated parts diagram also shows two thermostats. Are both of these thermostats the defrost thermostat? It looks like the two thermostats are wired in series or a series/parallel circuit. Is it recommended to replace both of these thermostats if they are indeed both a defrost thermostat? Is it the same part number for both? I assume the two thermostats would have to be cut out of the harness and the replacement thermostats butt spliced in? Thank you for your help. Happy New Year!!! David R.

David, Yes, your refrigerator has redundant defrost thermostats. The two(2) thermostats are wired in series, and yes they should both be replaced. The part number for both thermostats is WR50X10073 / WR50X10073 , the parts are in stock and available at this time. Yes you will need to "cut out" the thermostats from the harness, and "butt"splice them into place in the harness( you will also want to trim off the excess wire from the thermostats, and you should also apply a small amount of silicone sealant to the ends of the butt connectors to prevent any moisture condensation or frost from entering the splice and corroding the wires/connections. You're very welcome and Happy New Year !!!

Jim, Aside from the thermostat separating you would test the thermostat by doing a continuity test. With this unit either one of the two thermostats could have failed if you are having a defrost problem. You will also want to check the heater to make sure that it has not gone bad. This thermostat may be different in terms of the temp it opens and closes.
