The Defrost Heater is an OEM part for LG refrigerators. This part is responsible for melting away frost and ice that accumulates on the evaporator coils during the cooling cycle, ensuring the refrigerator operates efficiently and maintains the proper temperature.

Common causes for defrost heater failure include electrical failures such as blown fuses or faulty wiring, wear and tear from normal use, and damage from moisture or corrosion.

Symptoms of a failing Defrost Heater include:

  • Buildup of frost in the freezer compartment
  • The refrigerator struggling to maintain the set temperature
  • Leaks inside the refrigerator due to ice melting inconsistently
  • Increased energy usage as the fridge works harder to cool

This OEM LG part is also compatible with some Kenmore models.

For Lg Freezer Defrost Heater (Part Number: OEM16797777)

Ken for Model Number lfx31925SB/00

My LG 3-door fridge drips water during the defrost cycle, out of the refrigerator section. I've removed the back on 3 occasions to melt the ice and clear the drain hole of ice. The third time, I installed a metal bar that gets the heat closer to the drain hole. This was recommended on Youtube. It did not work. Some videos said if this does not work, then purchase a new heating element. Two elements are listed for my fridge, but I cannot tell which element is for the freezer and which is for the fridge. (case part item 408A or 408B). Which part is for the fridge, and is replacing this the best course of action? Why do fridge manufacturers not have heated drain holes? FYI: I've cleaned the door seals and leveled the fridge. The seals look great.

Ken, commonly when the defrost drain clogs up it is because of the drain tube 5251JA3003D at the compressor section getting a sticky residue and collecting dust. This causes the bottom of the tubing to get clogged and not let water pass through. The best place to start at this point would be to clean the drain tube ends so that they no longer cause the unit to clog up. Then the evaporator section can be cleared of the ice build-up.

Chief L, If the coils are icing up completely then this would be some type of defrost issue but with all of the components of the defrost having been replaced, would suggest going back and testing the controller and the heater. You could have received a defective board.
