The straight-vane agitator is the finned center post that drives wash action in a top-load washer. It replaces a cracked or stripped agitator to restore proper clothes movement and consistent cleaning performance. What it does:

  • Mounts on the drive shaft and oscillates to move laundry through wash water and detergent
  • Restores wash action when vanes are broken or the internal splines are worn/stripped
  • Helps address weak agitation, clothes not circulating, unusual rattling from a loose agitator, or visible damage
  • Direct replacement for the original straight-vane agitator design
What's included:
  • 1 straight-vane agitator
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and turn off water before servicing
  • Remove the center cap and hold-down bolt; lift the old agitator straight up
  • Align splines, seat the new agitator, then reinstall the bolt and cap snugly
  • Run a short cycle to ensure proper operation

Sue, You're on the right track, the first thing should be, to remove the agitator and check the splines in the bottom to see if they have stripped out on the transmission output shaft. Remove the center cap of the agitator, With a 7/16 in. socket, extension, and wrench, remove the bolt(turn counter clockwise). Grasp the agitator, and lift it up and out of the tub. Turn it upside down and check the splines in the opening of the center, and plastic shavings on the splines of the metal transmission output shaft. Thanks and good luck
