The Capacitor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washers that starts the motor by storing electrical energy and releasing it when the washer begins its cycle. This part ensures the washer operates smoothly from the moment it starts, providing the necessary jolt to the motor that enables it to begin its various functions, including spinning and agitating.

Causes of a bad capacitor can vary. Electrical surges can harm its internal components, while wear and tear over time may result in a reduced capacity to hold a charge.

Symptoms of a failing Capacitor include:

  • The washer failing to start.
  • A humming noise when the washer is supposed to begin its cycle
  • The washer starting but then quickly shutting down due to insufficient power to the motor.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Joseph, A faulty capacitor is possible but not likely at this point. Based on your post information and description, you may want to check or replace the timer WP3953156/WP3953156 Timer. Thanks,

Lou, You will want to check the drain pump to make sure that there is nothing caught in it. Also another thing that could potentially cause this would be a capacitor or a motor that would be faulty.

Bubba for Model Number Kenmore Washer 110.20872990

washer works through all cycles, however when it starts to agitate the lights (in the house) dim. Kinda creepy looks like we're running an electric chair in the back room. After removing the case there's a very loud click as the motor changes direction to agitate. I've operated it with the pump removed and even the motor disconnected from the transmission laying on the floor.Same thing, that eliminated the pump being clogged or the transmission. could it be a weak capacitor or is it the motor?

1 Answer

Bubba, With this issue it would most likely be a issue with the motor of the unit with the motor causing the lights to flicker.

Brad for Model Number 110.24052300

Hello, I've got a problem! My washing machine will fill, but when the timer moves on to the agitate, the motor hums for about 15 seconds until the thermal overload trips. If you manually move timer to spin setting, same thing happens, hum/no start. Once it cools off a bit, and you reset the timer switch it does the same thing. I have tested the lid switch, it's ok. Motor shaft spins freely by hand and it will run if I give the shaft a twist. I believe that it could be the start capacitor, although I attempted to test it and the numbers came up ok...please help.

1 Answer

Brad, If the motor just hums and you can spin the shaft then it will start then the issue will be a weak motor and the motor would need to be replaced.
