This Charcoal Filter is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool microwaves. The charcoal filter is responsible for improving the air quality in the kitchen by removing impurities and odors from the air. It is used to remove smoke, grease, and cooking odors as it is drawn up through the vent fan. By trapping these particles, the filter helps maintain cleaner air in the kitchen and prevents odors from recirculating and affecting the taste and smell of your food.

Causes of a bad Charcoal Filter include saturation from absorbing smoke and odors over time, accumulation of grease and particles that clog the filter, leading to decreased effectiveness, and physical damage that compromises its ability to filter air properly.

Symptoms of a bad Charcoal Filter include:

  • Persistent odors in the kitchen after cooking.
  • Smoke not being effectively vented out during microwave use.
  • Reduced airflow from the microwave's venting system.

Replacing the charcoal filter at regular intervals or when these symptoms are noticed ensures that your microwave continues to operate efficiently and keeps your kitchen air clean. This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Description- Color: metallic. Measures about 5 inches wide by 5 inches deep.

Hello Greg, I'm sorry but the charcoal filter cannot be cleaned. It would need to be replaced. We will need to ask you to post a new question including the model number from your units' I.D. tag so we can recommend parts that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Chip, For a proper diagnosis, we would need you to please verify the model number from the units' I.D. tag since it will not come up for us as a valid model number.

Hello Albert, there are no operational parts or wiring in the filter area of the microwave. You can unplug the microwave and remove the grill then the control panel screw,,, tip the control panel down and check the wiring to the rear of the control board and the door switches to see if any came loose.

Hello Albert, would recheck your model number and repost your question as it shows as an invalid model number. Also, we will need more information, what is running, what is not, is there a display, if you start the microwave does the interior light, cool fan and turntable work, any odd noises when it runs ?

Jim for Model Number MMV5208WW0

I know where the charcoal filter is and how to take it out and replace it. I know where to buy a replacement. But, while looking at the unit above the microwave which holds the filter itself, I can't determine if there is any air flow at all during usage. To filter the air through the filter, the air has to enter and then, after going through the filter, exit. There are no diagrams for airflow nor did the young lady at Maytag.com know. What is the flow pattern? The large motors with the fins, have the fins facing toward the wall, not the front of the microwave. (You have to admit this is a question from someone who has read the User Manual and Instructions so I know the who, what, where and why of the filter placement. don't these people keep the manuals?)

Jim, the air is going to be brought in through the bottom where the grease filter is. From there, the fan in the top back of your microwave is going to vent the air out whether it is out through the front where the charcoal filter is, or through a top vent if one is installed.
