The Worm Gear is an OEM part for Whirlpool mixers. This part drives the rotation of the planetary assembly. The planetary assembly is where the mixer's accessories attach.

You should replace the worm gear if it becomes worn out or damaged. Causes of a bad worm gear can include excessive strain from heavy or dense mixing tasks, lack of lubrication, or general wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a bad worm gear include:

  • The mixer attachments not turning
  • Grinding or clicking noises during operation
  • The mixer motor running but the attachments remaining stationary

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Worm Gear (Part Number: OEM18045315)

1 Answer

Tom, The planetary is always a little difficult to get out and should slide back up easily. As far as lining up the hole, use a small screwdriver to get the hold to line up or a nail that will fit in the hole to get it to line up.

Ron for Model Number KSM150PSOB1

The nylon worm gear on my wife's mixer stripped. I replaced the part and the planetary would turn again, but stalled out under any load. (wet flour) I suspected the motor and changed it out (rotor/stator and brushes). Used your parts and video to replace motor and adjust speeds. Mixer works fine under no load, but planetary stops turning when loaded while motor continues to turn with no apparent loss of speed. I held the mixer attachment and confirmed both the attachment gear and the planetary stopped turning with no grinding sounds but a slight ticking sound. Re-inspected the new nylon worm gear expecting to find damage, but it looks good. Checked the size and shape against stripped gear and looks the same. Drive pin on shaft (item 22) correctly engaged with gear hub. Is it possible the replacement worm gear is defective?

1 Answer

Yes, it is always possible to get a faulty part. I would be sure to double-check all the gearing in the planetary before I replace the worm gear again.

Ted for Model Number Model Number KSM150PSMC

I replaced the KitchenAid Stand Mixer Worm Gear 4162897 W10112253 and the mixer works. but when I use the beater or hook to mix dough, it stop working. (but I still can use wire whip in high and low speed.) ANSWER Ted, This would more likely be an issue with the motor windings possibly being weak causing the motor to not work for the heavier duty workload. Wednesday, February 27, 2019 How to determine the windings is bad? Do I need to replace both Armature and Field-Asm altogether? (which one is more likely the cause of Weak motor? anyway to test it? I am ready to order the parts, please advise.

1 Answer

Ted, " To test the stator with an ohmmeter. Set the ohmmeter on the RX1 scale and calibrate the meter. On the upper coil, connect one ohmmeter lead to the red wire, and the other lead to the black wire. If the ohmmeter shows a low resistance reading, the coil is good. Check the other coil the same way. If the ohmmeter deflects to 0 or if there is no deflection the coil is bad and the stator must be replaced. If all checks are OK, then you'll need to dismantle the mixer and check all the bearings and gears to determine which is "galled" and causing the "drag" on the motor and causing it to "stop working" under a "heavy" load.

Ted, Typically if the unit is running on one cycle then this would indicate the brushes are good but would not hurt to pull them out to check them. This would more likely be an issue with the motor windings possibly being weak causing the motor to not work for the heavier duty workload.

Ted, This issue sounds likely that the motor may be too weak to use the beater or the dough hook but we would need to have the model number to be able to assist with your question.

Janice for Model Number K5SS Kitchenaid Mixer

The planetary didn't turn on the Kitchenaid K5SS mixer, so I checked the worm gear which turned out to be stripped. In the process of checking the worm the motor brush got bent, so I ordered both the brush and the worm. I replaced the parts and put the mixer back together. Once together the mixer wouldn't turn on. The motor brush package got damaged during shipment and the brush became slightly bent. Can this be the issue? Do you have any suggestions?

1 Answer

Janice, Yes if the brush is bent it could cause the unit to not work but also make sure that you are putting it in the proper way. It has to go in a certain way.

1 Answer

Joe, You will want to make sure that you adjust the screws on the phase board and to do this you put on medium speed and adjust until it reaches a certain RPMs. If this checks ok then you will need to make sure that you did not knock any wires off the governer.
