Henry, If the shaft dropped down then it sounds like the valve has come loose from the manifold and you will want to make sure that the valve is installed properly. This will mean removing the main top to make sure that it is in position properly.

Jayma, To replace the shaft, you will need the burner valve and you will need to turn off the gas and take the unit out from the countertop. Once removed you will then take the burner heads and caps off and then will also remove the screws around the perimeter of the unit and remove the main top. This will give access to the valve to be replaced.
