The Infinite Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. It controls the heat levels of the elements on your cooktop, allowing you to adjust the temperature for precise cooking. 

Causes of a bad infinite switch can include electrical malfunctions, wear and tear from frequent use, or physical damage due to impacts or spills.  

Symptoms of a bad infinite switch include:

  • Burners not heating up or heating inconsistently
  • Burners stuck on a single heat setting
  • No response when adjusting the heat level
  • Sparks or electrical odors coming from the control area

James, the switch would need to be tested for continuity after turning the appliance power supply off. The switch would be tested from L1 to H1, L1 to HC, L1 to P, L2 to H2, and from terminal to terminal on the front block for continuity when the switch is turned onto the triple element setting. If there is not continuity at any point, the switch has failed and would need to be replaced.

Tom, the clicking sound would be the contacts in the switch opening and closing hard which can indicate a potential failure in the switch.

Helen, with the power supply turned off to the appliance, the switch W11129442 would need to be tested from L1 to H1, L1 to HC, L1 to P, L2 to H2, and from terminal to terminal on the front block for continuity when the switch is turned onto the triple element setting.
