James, The thickness of the foam tape [AP8286642] is approximately 1/8", the width approximately 3/4" and the length is 37 1/2".

For Kitchenaid cooktop, KECD866RBL01, will the foam tape 8286642 be enough for this 36" cook-top?

Hello Ben, As per the information on this part I was able to locate from the manufacturer on this part number, it is 37.5 inches in length. In light of this information, you will need to order four of these to go all the way around the cooktop.

Is this the same tape used to fix the stainless steel frame to the cooktop? If not, what is the correct tape?

Hello Greg, The tape WP8286642 is a foam tape that is used inbetween counter top and cooktop. There is not a tape available for taping down the steel fram to cooktop.
