The Cold Control is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators, acting as a thermostat that regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments. It's a critical component that ensures your refrigerator maintains the desired temperature to keep your food fresh and safe.

Causes of a bad Cold Control may include electrical malfunctions within the control unit, which can prevent accurate temperature sensing. Wear and tear from continuous use may lead to a degradation of the control's responsiveness.

Symptoms of a bad Cold Control include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too warm or too cold
  • Frequent or continuous running of the refrigerator's compressor
  • Inability to start the cooling system

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Cold Control (Part Number: OEM18018507)

Steve for Model Number ED5VHEXVQ04

My Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator/freezer stopped cooling a couple of weeks ago. I discovered the problem when food stored in freezer started melting. When I turned the cold control knob up or tapped it, the refrigerator/freezer would start cooling again. It appeared to be a problem with the thermostat/Cold Control part number WP2198202, so I replaced this part. Since then, the refrigerator/freezer are cooling properly. However, since I replaced the part, I hear the sound of what seems to be the compressor cycling much more frequently, where it will cycle on every 3-5 minutes, run for another several minutes, and then cycle off with no sounds, only to cycle on again in another 3-5 minutes, repeating this cycle for much of the day. But late last night (after the refrigerator/freezer doors had remained closed for several hours, and no one was opening the doors), I sat and listened, and the compressor stayed silent for about 30 minutes until I opened the refrigerator door, and upon closing it, within a minute the compressor sound came on again. It seems the new thermostat is working since the refrigerator/freezer is cooling properly. However, I am not sure why the compressor is cycling on/off so frequently, and thought maybe the new thermostat is too sensitive (would how the plastic shield covers the capillary tube and sensing bulb at the end of the tube affect this?). I am thinking this frequent cycling on and off may be bad in the long run for the compressor. I am not sure where to start to try to figure out the problem. Thank you very much for any suggestions you might have in helping me with this.

Steve, the capillary tube would need to be inspected for proper positioning and to ensure there is not a section that is pinched aside from the bulb. If this checks good, the most likely issue would be the adaptive defrost control WPW10366605 causing the failure. This can be verified by testing the thermostat for continuity after unplugging. If the thermostat does not have continuity when it is set to the recommended setting and the refrigerator is at the proper temperature, the defrost control is the cause of failure.

ArkS, There may be a slight adjustment on the knob shaft (marked + or -) this control specs state the range is from 0°f to 50°f. If the range is too high the control may be defective and need to be replaced.

Kevin, Since the defrost heater is coming on as soon as the thermostat is turned on, this would be a problem with the defrost timer. The heater does not feed through the operating thermostat and only goes through the timer.

Cuppajavamom for Model Number ASD2522WRB03

My 12 year old Amana side by side refrigerator has an intermittent problem keeping the freezer cold enough. Every few weeks, we noticed that all of the ice in the bin has melted into a big chunk. This started happening more often. There are no obstructions, the doors seal well, and we can hear the compressor running. We put a small dish filled with water on the top shelf, waited for it to freeze, then set a heavy marble on top. After a few days, the marble was at the bottom of the dish, but the water was frozen over it. It is so intermittent, it's hard to troubleshoot. The freezer evaporator fan and heater are working. Could the defrost thermostat or cold control be intermittent? Or is it more likely these components either work or don't work at all?

1 Answer

Cuppajavamom, it would be recommended that the condenser coils are cleaned to ensure that there can be proper airflow across the condenser coils near the compressor. Based on the information provided, it sounds like this unit is going into a defrost cycle and once out of the cycle, is taking an excessive amount of time to cool back down.

Kathryn, You can take one terminal and bend it up slightly where the terminals are not side by side.

Alan, Make sure the damper is open. You should feel air coming thru the back left upper corner of the refrigerator section. If not there is either a faulty fan or defrost problem. Ice will block the coils and no air can flow to the refrigerator section when the unit is not defrosting properly.

Jim, It will not matter which wire connects to which location because you are just passing power through the switch.

Marek, the red wire and the blue wire can be placed at either voltage terminal as the thermostat is a switch that just opens and closes based on the pressure against the switch.
