The Start Device Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is a kit that includes the start relay and overload, both of which are crucial components for the proper operation of the compressor. The start relay is responsible for initiating the compressor's operation by providing an electrical boost to start the motor. 

Causes of a faulty start device kit can include electrical component failure, power surges, or damage due to wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a bad start device kit may include:

• The compressor not running or cycling on and off frequently
• Inadequate cooling or fluctuations in temperature
• Unusual noises coming from the refrigerator

This PTC start relay mounts on the compressor and briefly powers its start winding to get it running, then drops out. Replacing a weak relay can restore reliable starts and resolve clicking/humming with no cooling.
