Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP4344040
This overload is a thermal protection device that mounts on the motor/compressor and opens the circuit when excessive heat or current is detected. Replacing a weak or failed overload helps restore safe startup and protects the windings from damage. What it does:
- Monitors motor/compressor temperature and current draw
- Interrupts power on overheat/overload to prevent damage
- Aids troubleshooting of start/run issues when paired with the start device
- Common symptoms: hums then clicks off, won't start, intermittent shutdown, frequent tripping
What's included:
- 1 thermal overload protector
Install notes:
- Disconnect power before servicing; allow components to cool
- Access the terminal area on the motor/compressor; remove any cover
- Note/photograph wire positions; transfer wires and fully seat the new overload on the correct terminal
- Inspect the start relay, capacitor, and terminals for heat damage; replace any compromised parts

This motor overload protector helps prevent motor overheating by cutting power if the motor draws excessive current or gets too hot. It restores normal operation once the motor cools, helping protect the main motor from heat-related damage. What it does:
- Senses excessive motor current/heat and interrupts power to stop the motor from overheating
- Can prevent burning or further damage when a motor is overloaded or stuck
- Common symptom: washer motor hums but won't start or spins intermittently
- Works as a protective component in the washer's motor circuit
What's included:
- One overload (motor protector) as shown
Install notes:
- Disconnect power before accessing or replacing the overload
- Access the motor area from the rear or bottom panel per your model's service instructions
- Handle terminals carefully and reconnect wires to the correct terminals
- If symptoms persist after replacement, test the motor and related components.

My whirlpool refridgerator stopped cooling / clicking sound heard coming from the compressor Mary G. • Stevensville , MD • November 29, 2014
I unplugged the unit, removed the back cardboard panel and replaced the compressor starting device, and also the capacitor. Plugged the unit back in and the compressor came on and immediately began cooling. I was so happy (proud of myself) for diagnosing the problem and fixing the unit. I can't take all the credit though... Thank You Appliance Parts Pros for your great website with all the helpful tips and suggestions. Easy ordering of parts and extremely quick shipping...I highly recommend...

No cooling from refrigerator lights worked but compressor did not run Jeff B. • Ovalo , TX • May 07, 2015
Checked compressor windings - ok. Start relay looked no rattle or burning. Start capacitor seamed ok but hard to check. No 120VC to start relay at any time. Ordered thermistor, and electronic control unit. Figuring it was a bad thermistor not telling the ECU it was warm and to turn on the compressor. Or the ECU was damaged and was not sending the 120v to the compressor. Changed the thermistor first (cheapest part and as Appliance parts pros has a return policy I wanted to start there). ...

After 10 years, the Start Device Part # AP4393517, attached to the compressor failed. I replaced it with the similar part, but not factory original and not sure if it is new from an appliance store nearby. By not being sure how long this part will last, I decided to order this part and the other parts from you, just to be on the safe side. I replaced the part myself. It was not easy to get down to the floor and a little cumbersome to remove the part because it is attached very hard to the...

Refrigerator not getting cold at all and everything thawing out compressor clicking Victor F. • West Milford , NJ • June 15, 2015
I researched the problem and determined that the only thing that can cause this was compressor bad or not starting. Since it was cold the day before I felt it had to be the starter parts and ordered them. It was also very important to clean the coil which I believe caused the over heating.
