Replaced the heater element, per the video. Also had to connect a new terminal to one of the heater element wires. Once the heater was again connected electrically, the washer completed the entire wash cycle without hesitation. (During the time that the heater element was non-functional, the control "dial" would stop near the bottom, about half way through the cycle, and had to be advanced "one click" manually). I knew the detergent dispenser was broken. That was an easy fix - though I did find that the retaining pin was too big, and I had to make the hole in the shaft a little bigger. As far as the noise, I started disassembling and cleaning things, until I found that the diverter had broken free from the top of the housing, and was now stuck on the motor.
