Followed the suggestions and washed off the wave guide cover first (it had some food soil on it). Put it back on and tried operating the microwave with nothing in it. Got a real big spark then. Discovered that there were some areas on the door that had paint scraped off. Looked like the power was all directed to this bare metal area causing the mica wave guide cover to really scorch then, with nothing else inside the microwave to absorb the energy.
