Following some advice found on this site, I unsnapped the existing handle starting at the bottom. Only the black part, being sure to leave the chrome piece intact. After unsnapping the connectors, I pulled down to slide the handle free. To install the new piece I just reversed that, by sliding the handle up and into the connector.
