It is responsible for generating electric sparks to ignite the gas burners on the cooktop. The spark module produces consecutive sparks when a surface burner knob is turned on, which ignite the gas mixture and allows the burner flame to ignite safely and consistently. 

Causes of a bad spark module can include faulty electrodes, worn internal components that hamper sparking, or damage due to moisture intrusion or power surges over time. 

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

• Burners that will not ignite or only intermittently ignite 
• Flashback or burning above the burner head 
• The smell of gas when turning burners on
