First off this appliance is 16 years old. The replacement machine is no longer made in the color we need, also the new ones rated very poorly. After taking the appliance apart I discovered the high voltage capacitor had been leaking, probably the odor I had been noticing. The Smart Board is an OEM part for GE Microwaves. As the central control system, this board regulates all primary functions including power levels, cooking times, safety features, and the digital interface.
Causes of a faulty smart board can include failures over time from repeated heat cycling during use. Electrical fluctuations or physical damage from drops or impacts may also degrade functionality.

This GE replacement board is compatible with Hotpoint, RCA and select Kenmore models as well.
Replaced the main logic board ("Smart Board"). This board has a relay that energizes the magnetron. This relay failed in the closed position - probably welded itself closed due to high current flow. It is a shame that the board costs $115, while the relay is probably just a $5 item - but you cannot repair the board.
