Diagnosed by local appliance shop as element. Didn't sound correct due to manner of failure. Also they were charging three times Whirlpool list for the part. Continuity checked element with ohm meter - ok. Replaced switch. Problem solved. Mine had enough slack in wiring to lift cooktop from island & support. 12-15 screws to lift off glass and you're there. Familiarity with a multi-meter is a plus to diagnose correctly.
