Richard H North Lewisburg , OH February 14, 2020 Appliance: Model 1988 FRIGIDAIRE SELF-CLEANING RANGE Lower element not getting hot enough on electric range Ordered spare part that actually fit my oven. Arrived in three days from next state over. Unplugged power cord, removed racks, used 1/4" socket on ratchet with 6 inch extension to remove two sheet metal screws at lower back of oven. Pulled old element out 2 inches then tilted front of element up 45 degrees for spade connectors to clear holes at back of oven. Once clear, pulled element forward until the white #16 wires pulled through the openings in the oven (inside at the back). By hand, gently wiggled the two spade connectors off of the blades on the old element. Removed element from oven. New element was bent slightly so free ends were only 12" apart, they needed to be 13-3/4" to fit back into the oven. VERY GENTLY I pulled the ends apart until they fit the opening in the back of the oven. Next, wiggled the spade connectors onto the new element electrical blades and fished the element into position in the oven, being careful to tilt the element until the spade connectors cleared the openings in the back wall of the oven. Then lowered the new element to horizontal and push it further back into the oven until the screw flanges lined up with the rear wall of the oven. Using the ratchet, I replaced the two screws to hold the element in placed (I noted that the front of the element was slightly elevated so the front of the element was not fully resting upon the front two feet - but the element will relax once heated and then rest on the front feet.) Now installed, I put the racks back in the oven, then last plugged the power cord back into the big receptacle behind the range. I cleared the tea kettle off of the right rear burner to expose the oven chimney, the turned on the power to the oven. The new element smoked a little bit when first turned on, but that cleared in about 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. I turned off the oven then left the front door open for 1/2 hour for the oven tool cool. I baked lasagna later that night with garlic gnots. Everything cooked uniformly and quickly, thanks to the new heating element.
