Spencer, Most common reason for chpped grates, Usage. Chips can occurr when the grates are banged by pots or pans, when removing for cleaning, etc. Grates are high end grates usuall cosist of a metal based frame and a porcelain coating( porcelain is basically glass). Porcelain wont chip as readily as expected, you may bang a grate, and it can tak days or weeks before the chip dtaches and falls off the grate. Another major concern is spillage , boil overs and extremely hot or long cook periods with oversized pots or pans. Thanks and Good Luck
