George for Model Number gts18fbmerww Everything works on the refrigerator except the compressor won't start. I took off the overload and it sounds like everything inside was rattling. Will that stop the compressor from starting?
Answer Hello George, This will certainly cause an issue. The rattling noise is the ceramic disc in the start relay. It is necessary that this ceramic disc be intact to start the compressor. If the compressor is bad, this will occur, but in the case of a fatigued relay, it can happen anyway. The only way to know for sure is to replace the start device WR09X10106 and if it runs 2 days, the issue is usually resolved. You can test the compressor electrically, but this is no indication that it is mechanically intact. Just make sure if there are any burned spots on the terminals coming out of the compressor, sand them until shiny to insure a proper electrical connection so the new start device doesn't generate heat and fail prematurely.
