Kathy for Model Number GE GTD42EASJ2WW My dryer smells like it is burning and the drum makes a popping sound when you turn it. Is it the belt or what could it be?
Answer Kathy, the belt could be an issue if it has worn out or has lost potions of the grooves on the belt, but that doesn't occur a lot. The burn odor is most likely due to a restricted exhaust vent or vent hood or could be due to the drum not tumbling at the proper RPM (50 RPM +/- 2). But for both complaints, the most likely issue is a worn-out WE3M33 / WE3M33 Shaft & Bracket Ass'y, which supports the rear portion of the tumbler and allows the tumbler to rotate at the proper RPM.
