Dave, There is a small grey knob on the timer that will advance it. You can go very slow and listen for it to kick out of defrost and into run mode. The two loudest clicks is defrost in and out and very close as your turning the dial.

Dave, Yes you can manually advance the defrost timer. You can usually use a coin or flat blade screwdriver. Turn the center escapement clockwise until you hear a click, turn it slowly until you hear another click, then the timer should be in the cooling mode amd the compressor should start to run.
