Greg for Model Number GE GSH25JFXBWW Our refrigerator has been running very warm. Thanks to you advice to others in your forum, I emptied the freezer and removed the back panel....you guessed it, the evaporator coil was completely frozen. I used a hair drier to melt the ice last night. I also had to chip the cold air exchange opening that allows the cold air to flow from the freezer to the refrigerator as that was blocked solid. The refrigerator side is now once again cold. Based on what I have been reading it sounds like I need to replace either the defrost timer, the heater or the thermostat. While I was defrosting the freezer, I saw both the thermostat and the heater, but I could not find the defrost timer. Does this unit have a defrost timer? Or do I simply need to replace the heater and thermostat. Do I need to buy both parts separately or is there a Defrost Heater Assembly that fits? Thank you
Answer Greg, For your unit it would not have a defrost timer but it incorporates a adaptive defrost control which is part of the main control board. The recommendation would be to test the defrost heater WR51X10055 to make sure that it has continuity. If it does have continuity then it is good and would not need to be replaced. If this checks ok then you can test the continuity of the defrost limiter but in most cases for your unit the limiter WR50X10065 would not be the issue with the unit. There is another component inside the freezer compartment located on the top of the evaporator on the left side and is a white piece. This is a thermistor WR55X10025 for the defrost. You will want to test this thermistor to make sure that it is good for resistance. With the thermistor sitting in ice on the evaporator it should have a resistance rating of approximately 42.2K ohms. and if you were to take it out and let it get to room temp would be 5K ohms. If this does not check ok then the thermistor will need to be replaced. if this checks ok then the control board WR55X10942C would be the issue. Read More...
