Stacey for Model Number GTD42EASJ2WW

My dryer will not start at all and makes no noise to anything when you press the start button. It began as an intermittent issue where sometime it would turn on and other times it would not. Now it will not at all. I looked at some of the Q&A on here and got a EverStart 10711WDI meter and checked the start switch. No matter what setting I put the meter on when I touch meter on the back of the starter switch as explained, the meter never did anything. Does that mean I need a new starter switch or am I using the wrong type of meter?

Answer

Stacey, the meter is fine and should work satisfactorily. You need to set the meter on the "continuity" setting(vertical lines, looks similar to the volume or speaker setting) label and disconnect the wires from the switch, attach or hold the meter leads to the two terminals, then press the button. A start switch is a "momentary" contact switch and will have "continuity" (and the meter will beep) only when the button is pressed. If there is no continuity or beep when the button is pressed, the start switch has failed and will need to be replaced.
