Answer

Doug, No it would not be a " filter issue". The possibilities are: a fabric softener residue build up inside or under the agitator. There is a slight possibility there may be a leak in the transmission shaft casing, and oil is being leaked into the tub. A couple of ways to check. Find an article with the stain, wet the spot then iron it or dry it with a hair dryer. If the spot has a camphor or rope odor then it's transmission oil, if it has a sweet or flowery odor, then its the softener. You can wash out the majority of the residue using hot water and a lot of detergent(1 1/2 to 2 times as much as a recommended wash load, fill the washer, add the detergent, let it wash 10 to 12 minutes then let it soak 20 to 30 minutes, then resume the cycle.
