Answer Hello Greg, The coupler splines are plastic and the splines on the shaft are steel. The shaft splines will not wear against the plastic. The plastic splines are the ones that wear out and when looking inside it, they normally look good until touching them with a small screwdriver or something when it becomes apparent that the splines are actually the grease to prevent the shaft from rusting has taken the shape of the splines.
