Tom H for Model Number Maytag MFF2258VAE2

I have the same ice dam problem as described by Ming (Jenn Air refrigerator Model/Serial JFC2087HRS/10208490EX) but I do not have the fan issue. The refrigerator seems to be working fine otherwise. I first noticed this problem 3 months ago when the refrigerator compartment would not cool to the proper temperature while the freezer still worked fine. I had a repair service in to fix the problem and they noticed the ice build up in the rear of the freezer compartment completely blocking the vent openings. There was also a frozen pool of water in the bottom the freezer. The repair person replaced the electronics controller board as he said this had probably been damaged in one of the many power blips I have in my area of NJ. It has been three months and the problem has returned. I had placed a power filter and control device on the refrigerator that keeps the power off to the refrigerator for 3 min. after a power blip. Is this most likely the electronics board again or is there some other possibility? Thank you! Tom

Answer

Hello Tom. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the evaporator coils in the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
