Customer Questions and Answers for Control Board by Whirlpool

By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18021552
Manufacturer Part Number: WP2307037

This replacement part is an electronic control board. It is manufactured by Whirlpool and is responsible for monitoring and controlling the functions in a refrigerator. It ensures that the compressor turns on at the appropriate time, handles freezer defrosting, and much more. It can be damaged by exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures. If the control board has failed, the refrigerator most likely will not operate at all. In some cases, users may notice intermittent operation, but the board should still be replaced as soon as possible. To replace the board, first unplug the refrigerator. Always wear gloves when servicing the refrigerator. This is a genuine OEM part and it is sold individually. It fits Whirlpool, Kenmore, Amana, and Roper branded refrigerators.

Creolerose for Model Number Kenmmore (Whirlpool) 106.44422602 side-by-side counter depth fridge

The fan on my Kenmore/Whirlpool refrigerator is intermittently stopping and starting every few seconds, although the refrigerator is running fine. He said that since the fan was running OK, it was the controller that was the problem. After speaking with his parts people, he was told that there is a kit for this (apparently it's been a problem with this model of refrigerator). Is this the correct kit (part?) for fixing this problem, and is it very complicated to install? He indicated that the labor could be expensive because it might require that other boards or wiring harnesses be replaced. I'd rather not have to buy a new refrigerator. He quoted a price somewhere between $350 and $375, but he also said he'd never done this repair. Is it terribly complicated and likely to cause high labor charges?

Answer

Hello Rose, the symptom your ref is having is caused by a faulty main control board that is located in a housing mounted under the ref in the compressor area (not the compressor inverter board), the original control board is no longer available but the manufacturer (Whirlpool ) has a service replacement control board available, however, because this is a Kenmore ref that board is only available thru Sears by one of their service technicians. The actual board replacement procedure is simple as it is accessible under the ref once the ref is moved out of its location. There are no other boards or harnesses needed for this model, the old/new boards are just swapped.
