Symptoms of a bad Broil Element include:

Paul Y for Model Number 666AJ-ESAW

I purchased broiler element Y04000048 for my freestanding Admiral range 666-ESAW. The replacement part is identical to the old one. I see that I can replace the wires in the same positions as they were on the old one. But an instruction sheet that came with the part confuses me. It says: "It is necessary to use the enclosed ground screws (2) for mounting the element to assure a proper ground. The ground wire .... attached to the ground lug of the element is no longer required and should be removed." My questions: 1) I assume the ground wire is the one furthest from the brass lug. The ground is the leftmost terminal as seen facing an installed element. Is that right? 2) What does "remove" mean? Can I just re-install the ground wire on the new element as it was on the old and then use the two screws provided for the mounting plate? Or.... do I have to somehow physically remove and/or terminate the old ground wire? 3) I'm also assuming that the two new screws go in the mounting plate at the back of the oven and that somehow this is sufficient to ground the element. Is that correct? Thanks in advance for your help. Paul

Answer

Paul, you Do need to remove the ground wire, you'll find that the two self tapping screws(pointed ends) will attach the mount bracket to the oven cavity and provide a more than efficient ground. It's best to remove the ground screw and wire, so there's no mix up in the future. Wiring the element should be identical to the original element.
