Hello Mark, The ignitors will have to turn almost white hot to pull enough current to open the gas valve. It sounds as though the ignitors were getting weak which caused the gas smell. I would use a clamp on ampmeter TJCL1100 on one wire to the ignitor and make sure they are pulling from 3.6 to 3.9 amps of current. This holds true for both the bake and broil ignitors WP9782065. If the proper current draw is not there, the ignitors have broken down in resistance and will require replacement.
