Dan for Model Number WTW4950XW2 Washer less then 4 yrs old. Making an extremely loud noise during the spin cycle (sounds like an airplane taking off!). I'm suspecting the gearcase is bad. Started disassembling machine, everything appeared to be in it's place and tight. Removed impeller and tub ring. Unable to pull basket off of shaft (tried spraying with penetrating oil...no luck). Went to the bottom, disconnected all the harnesses, removed 4 screws holding gearcase assembly on...unable to pull gear case assembly off of basket and tub. Following instructions in tech manual (http://applianceassistant.com/ServiceManuals/w10329932_l-84_whirlpool_vertical_modular_washer.pdf). Baffled. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated on getting things apart, as well as if the gearcase is a likely culprit of the noise.
Answer Dan, With the washer screaming during spin cycle then it is most likely the gearcase that is the issue as the gearcase has the bearings in it. For removal of the tub, you may have to try wobbling the tub from side to side to get it freed up. It sounds like it is just stuck from possible old detergent build up. Read More...
