Thomas for Model Number Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator/Freezer

My ice maker gave us some problems last season at our Winter home. Using your wonderful website I learned of the adjustment procedure to decrease the amount of water to the tray. Which stopped the dripping, icicles, c!umped ice etc. This season the ice maker started out fine. After a cocktail to celebrate living another season we change the filter, purge the water per owners manual and turn on ice maker. Dump first couple of loads, yada yada. About a month ago it seemed like it wasn't producing as much ice. And week ago it just stopped. We performed the deicing of the fill tube. Got about a half dozen cubes. Then maybe two regular trays, then nothing. Since we are getting a good flow of chilled water from the dispenser can I take the water inlet solenoid valve out as a problem? Should I try and readjust back to original (or as close as I can remember) water level setting? My wife who has better eyes, smaller fingers and is the same height as the unit says she can feel an ice blockage at the water outlet to the fill chute in the rear of the freezer. What is the cause and how do we prevent an ice blockage there. The unit went in we put the house up. So six years old but only used half that time. Thank you for your help in advance.

Answer

Thomas, You will want to check to make sure that there is power to the water valve when it calls to be filled. If the fill tube is not frozen and the valve gets power then the water valve would be the issue. You cannot rule out the valve just because the dispenser is running. There are 2 solenoids that are on the valve, one for water and one for ice and one can fail while the other is still good. If there is no power getting to the valve then this will be an icemaker assembly that is faulty.
