Answer John, Have you recently used a petroleum based product inside the house ( oil based paint, varnish, pesticide, floor wax, etc.) ? If you have, this could be a normal by product of the chemicals left in the air. You may not smell it, but when the air is drawn over the flame or heated, the molecules expand and produce an odor. Carbon monoxide is odorless so it's not that. Are the burner flames blue, with little or no yellow or white tipping, this would indicate a properly adjusted fuel air mix and proper burn characteristics. Read More...
