Tim for Model Number JED8430ADB I would like to replace the knob but the whole fan knob unit had gone inside. I believe I have to lift up the top in order to gain access to the fan knob unit but I am having a hard time trying to lift up the top. Is there a way to lift it up?

Disconnect the downdraft duct under the unit to allow the unit to be pulled up. Place towels on either side of the unit folded to prevent damage to the counter top. Now lift the unit and turn it diagonal to the counter top opening and allow it to rest there. Remove the screws around the edges of the cook top and around the inside of the vent area.
