Ken H. for Model Number GSX9885JQ0 I have a Whirlpool Gold series, direct drive washer, model GSX9885JQ0. The start capacitor burned and melted. Also, one wire, not connected to the capacitor, appears to have been over heated as well. Subsequently the machine won't agitate or spin as the motor won't kick on. I took the whole thing apart: the motor spins freely while on the bench and all winding are within spec; there is nothing jammed in the water pump; the centrifugal start switch passes a bench test, gearbox spins freely and reverses gears when turned by hand on the bench; agitator is fine. Also note: the machine did not shut itself down as it would if the motor overheated, and the were no failure codes displayed. So, why did that cap melt? I have a theory, but don't know how to explain it. So, first I thought I'd throw the question out there and see if anyone has had the experience. I'm pressed for time as there are 5 people in the house all waiting for me to solve the problem. Anybody want to help me here? Thanks.
Answer Hello Ken, This sounds like the start capacitor WP8572720 simply failed. If a new one does not restore operation, the unit will need to be troubleshot for a harness issue or another failed component if the motor windings are not shorted. The wiring diagram from the control panel is very useful if necessary to troubleshoot for an issue such as this. Read More... Answered by AppliancePartsPros.com | Tuesday, November 17, 2015
