Manufacturer Part Number: WPW10178988

The Rotor Position Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is responsible for monitoring the position and speed of the rotor, ensuring the motor operates correctly to perform various washing cycles. The sensor sends precise data to the washing machine's control board, which adjusts the motor's function accordingly.

Causes of a bad rotor position sensor can include electrical failures, wear and tear over time, or physical damage from impact or moisture exposure. When this sensor fails, it disrupts the communication between the motor and control board, leading to operational issues.

Symptoms of a bad rotor position sensor include:

  • The washing machine not spinning or agitating
  • Error codes indicating motor issues
  • The machine stopping mid-cycle
  • Unusual noises coming from the motor area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Answer

Hello Steve. I have to agree that this is probably the rotor position sensor WPW10178988. I would strongly advise to check all your connections at the control and the rps end of the harness as I have seen this problem caused often by a bad connection. I wouldn't bother changing the rps without changing the wiring harness W10184256 at the same time as the dis-assembly for the rps is the same at the bottom of the unit as the dis-assembly for the harness. I sure hope this helps!
