The Rotor Position Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is responsible for monitoring the position and speed of the rotor, ensuring the motor operates correctly to perform various washing cycles. The sensor sends precise data to the washing machine's control board, which adjusts the motor's function accordingly.

Causes of a bad rotor position sensor can include electrical failures, wear and tear over time, or physical damage from impact or moisture exposure. When this sensor fails, it disrupts the communication between the motor and control board, leading to operational issues.

Symptoms of a bad rotor position sensor include:

  • The washing machine not spinning or agitating
  • Error codes indicating motor issues
  • The machine stopping mid-cycle
  • Unusual noises coming from the motor area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Rotor Position Sensor (Part Number: OEM18049140)

Tim, based on the information provided, the most likely cause of failure would be the main control W11400681 if the lid locks properly and if there is not an error code identified through the diagnostic mode.

My Whirlpool Cabrio was making a very loud noise while completing the spin cycle in addition to leaking so I replaced the shaft, bearings and seal via kit. The unit spins very smoothly now and quietly with no codes during diagnostic run, but every time I attempt a load of laundry it washes and does fun up until the spin cycle (12 min remaining) when I get a UL unbalanced code regardless of being balanced or not (very little drum wobble). Checked stator again and no cracks visible. All suspension rods and springs look to be in good shape as well. Never received UL code prior to repair so unsure what may have caused this to just now start. Thank you so much!

1 Answer

Mike, While the suspension rods and springs may look good, they are the most likely cause for the unit to get the UL code.

Al, if the washer is able to operate in a drain and spin cycle properly, the drive shaft would need to be inspected for corrosion where the basket sits. If there is corrosion, the drive shaft and bearing kit W10435302 would need to be replaced.

I have a Bravos 300 washer and haven't been able to find how to retrieve the fault codes so I'm not sure if this video will solve my problem. I was able to run the diagnostic tests but nothing came up as a fault. My washer works but it has started to spin extremely fast in spin mode, more than normal. I don't hear any screeching from the bushings as it still spins smoothly, I'm just not sure what would cause this to spin so fast , almost sounds like a jet engine. Could this be the RPS control?

1 Answer

Larry, the loud sound similar to a jet engine would be caused by the bearings W10435302 failing. This can cause the perception of the basket spinning faster than normal.

Phillip, it would be recommended that the unit is placed into manual test mode and the fill test ran until it has reached a proper fill level. From there, the manual drain test would be operated to see if the inner basket catches and then suddenly drops (basket may need to be wiggled) when the water has completely emptied. If the spin basket does drop down suddenly, the failure would be in the driveshaft, requiring the bearing and tub seal kit W10435302 be replaced.

I have replaced the tub shaft and bearings twice on a Brovos XL, and several months after, the UL code rears its head. The unit will consistently fail at 6 minutes remaining on the spin cycle, if most any clothes are inside; however spins and runs full cycle when empty. Clothes are balanced well enough. I have checked the stator for cracks and tightened the already secure the bottom allen bolt. I am not sure if this is an RPS issue or balance shafts. If it's a main board issue it's going to the scrap heap...

1 Answer

PB, This could be the suspension rods that are faulty and causing the unit to get off balance.

Hello Al, the fault code F51 code indicates the control board is not detecting the drive motor RPS (Rotor Position Sensor) sensor WPW10178988, this could be caused by a faulty sensor or a lower wire harness problem WPW10137697.

Maytag model MVWB725BW0. Does not want to agitate; get F51 error code on all wash cycles. Sometimes get OL overload code, but 3 pr of small women's jeans should not overload machine! We checked & hub is good; removed few coins & cleaned area, but nothing else found - even used needle nose to reach deeper. Rinse/drain/spin cycle works. Would this be rotor position sensor (F51 code) or something with control board, since we also got the OL code? Thank you.

1 Answer

Hello Vaughn, first try to rotate the inner tub manually, it should rotate easily, if not check if the rotor has come loose or did a cloth get under the basket and prevents rotation. This model has several fault codes for almost every component, it also came with a technical test sheet located in the control panel area.
