Customer Questions and Answers for Compressor Start Relay (Ptc) by Whirlpool

By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18020691
Manufacturer Part Number: WP2262181

This PTC start relay mounts on the compressor and momentarily powers the start winding to get the motor running, then disengages for normal operation. Replacing a weak relay can stop repeated clicking and help restore cooling.

  • Provides initial boost to the compressor's start winding for reliable startup
  • Automatically drops out after startup so the compressor runs on the run winding
  • Helps address symptoms like warm temperatures, compressor clicking or humming without starting, or frequent overload trips
  • Failure may show as rattling, burn marks, or a melted relay housing
What's included: 1 PTC start relay Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and remove the rear access panel to reach the compressor
  • Allow components to cool; note wire locations and take a reference photo
  • Pull the old relay straight off the compressor pins; align and firmly seat the new relay in the same orientation, then reconnect wires
  • If your unit uses a run capacitor and/or separate overload protector, reconnect per the wiring diagram before restoring power

Augie N for Model Number Kenmore Refrigerator Model #106.8678281

Refrigerator stopped working...light is on. Disconnected power supply and tried plugging back in 2 hours later. No noise, no click, nothing. Have parts with numbers FSP 1114291 with 2 terminals. FSP945507 with 2 terminals (#2 and # 3) (1 and 4 have no terminals) and part # FSP 945586 with 2 posts with red wires. Can one/all of these be the problem? Can a bad compressor cause this shut down without any noises when plugged in? Can these parts be tested outside of the appliance?

Answer

Augie, These listed parts will not be the issue with the unit. If there is nothing on in the unit other than the lights then you will want to look at the control panel in the refrigerator compartment and there will be a hole towards the back. This is the location of the defrost timer. There is a dial on the timer that you can put a flat blade screwdriver in and turn. It will only turn one direction, turn the defrost timer til it clicks. If the unit comes back on then the defrost timer will be the issue and will need to be changed.
