The Ice Dispenser Solenoid is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It controls the mechanism that opens and closes the ice chute door, allowing ice to be dispensed from the ice maker to the user.

Causes of a bad ice dispenser solenoid can include electrical failures, wear and tear from frequent use, or damage from moisture or debris buildup.  

Symptoms of a bad ice dispenser solenoid include:

  • The ice dispenser not dispensing ice
  • The chute door not opening or closing properly
  • Unusual noises during dispensing
  • Ice clogging or jamming in the chute

Gerald, For the unit only dispensing crushed ice, you will want to check to make sure that the solenoid is not stuck in the up position. If the solenoid is not stuck then you would want to replace the solenoid.

Hello Gerald, You should first check the bracket WP2180226 in the dispense area and then make sure the crushed/cubed solenoid is not frozen up. Heat the area with a hair dryer for 10 to 15 minutes and retry to see if this is the issue. Also, if there are a lot of ice particles in the bottom of the bin, the manufacturer say to clear these out since it will cause the cube diverter to freeze in position and cause the issue.
