By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18834129
Manufacturer Part Number: W11120791

The infinite switch is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool cooktops. Located inside the panel it helps monitor temperature and functions through sensing heating elements and bake cycles. Precise cooking depends on its calibrated feedback.

Causes of a faulty cooktop interface switch include wire damage from heat exposure, excess baked-on residue insulating contacts, or repeated temperature fluctuations degrading components.

Symptoms include:

  • Inability to preheat or maintain set cooking temperatures
  • Failure to advance cycles or randomly turning off
  • Error messages flashing on the control panel

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Paul for Model Number JennAir 20237

I replaced the infinite switches for both of the right-side heating elements on my JennAir range using part W11120791 (AP6278040). Now if both switches are on, if either switch is set to high than both elements will be on all the way. I had moved the wires to the new switches one by one (using the new HC terminal for the old H2) and since I noticed this issue I verified that the right side is wired just like the old switches on the left. But the symptom implies a wiring error. Furthermore, I have noticed that the H1 outputs go to a common connection to the elements and the HC (former H2) outputs go to the individual burners. Thinking about it, if the HC outputs should actually be common and the H1s should go to the individual elements that would explain my issue. So, has the design of Robertshaw infinite switches changed in the last 20 or so years, such that I need to reverse L!/H1 and L2/HC(H2) to match the wiring of my stove?

Answer

Hello Paul, the manufacturer no longer supports this model, there are no wiring diagrams to reference. However on the older Jennair cooktops with the downdraft vent in the middle ,for the cooktop burner's infinite switch wiring the black wire L1supply connected to the switch's L1 terminal and was closed to H1 terminal anytime the switch was in any position other than "off" and H1 output went to a common wire linking the one side (right or left) front and rear burners . The red L2 supply connected to the switch's L2 terminal and cycled to terminal H2 with individual wires to the burners for the burners' temperature regulation. The replacement infinite switch w11120791 W11120791 is a correct substitute as per the manufacturer.
