The Micro Switch is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators that is responsible for controlling the ice and water dispenser. The switch operates by responding to mechanical actions, like the pressing of the dispenser paddle or button to open or close to allow water and ice to be dispensed. 

Symptoms of a bad Micro Switch include:

  • The ice or water dispenser not functioning  
  • Intermittent operation of the dispenser 
  • Stuck dispenser preventing ice or water from stopping

Hello Jerry, If the fans do not run you will probably need to replace the adaptive defrost control 4388932. If the fans are running you will need to pull the unit out and remove the start relay from the side of the compressor and shake it. If it rattles, it will need to be replaced to start the compressor. If the compressor is already running, you should remove the rear freezer wall and check the frost pattern. It should be even at least 3/4 of the way down. If there is frost an inch thick only on the very top of the evaporator coils, this is an indication of an air circulation problem. The air return into the bottom of the freezer section and on the fresh food side should be checked for obstructions. Also check the fan motor for normal full speed operation.
